Successful Living Pro cycling team continued to gather valuable NRC points in one of the toughest stage races in America. The 22nd
Annual Tour of the Gila in Silver City, NM played host to hundreds of top cyclists from all over the world. This five-day stage race is well
known for its long climbs, exposed windy conditions and its altitude.
The riders raced from Wednesday through Sunday covering 400 miles of rugged terrain in New Mexico. The final day of racing known as
the ‘Gila Monster’ could be one of the most feared one day races in the US if it stood alone, but being placed at the end of an already tough
week makes it harder. With five categorized climbs and 105 miles adding up to over 10,000ft of climbing this last stage requires both top
physical and mental fitness.
The Successful Living Cycling team was a threat every day and continued to show their depth placing three riders consistently in the top 20
in almost every stage. The race was highlighted by another breakthrough ride by Successful Living’s rookie Brad White. Brad finished 5th
place on three stages narrowly missing victory and sixth on general classification proving he is one of the biggest new talents of 2008.
“Each race I learn more about my body and how hard it can be pushed, I think Sunday I found a new limit,” said White. “I’m still learning so
much every time I race my bike at this level and it’s so helpful having a strong team behind me that is willing to teach me the ropes.”
The downside of the race was a 15-rider pile up on the last stage that took out two Successful Living riders. Curtis Gunn and Brian Jensen
both were victims on the high-speed 50mph decent. After some roadside first-aid and a trip to the hospital for further examination, both were
released with negative x-rays and only few minor stitches.
“Unfortunately this is the down side of racing and it’s not fun but I know Brian and I will be back in the line up in a few weeks,” commented
Curtis Gunn.
Next on tap is the Mt. Hood Classic May 13-18th, a six-stage race in Hood River, OR. This race will mark the return of Canadian champion
Charles Dionne to the teams line up and will start the team’s 6-week road trip, which will take them to Oregon, Michigan, Washington DC,
Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Nevada.
